As I listened to the lyrics of Emerson Day’s “Get Behind Me,” I was immediately reminded of Jesus’ being tempted by Satan in Matthew 4:1-11. Satan tried to tempt Jesus to sin, tell Jesus lies about His identity and purpose, and get Him to question His trust in the Father and His plan for His life. Sound familiar? The enemy still tries to trick the people of God today with those same lies, attacks, and accusations that don’t line up with God’s Word, God’s heart, or God’s plan for our lives. Of course, Satan was trying to hinder Jesus from finishing His work on the cross to save humanity from our sins, so that’s a unique scenario and obviously not exactly the same as what you and I experience in our Christian lives today.
But Ephesians 6:10-18 does tell us that, as Jesus followers, we are in a spiritual battle. The Enemy does try to hinder us from growing in our faith and trusting in God’s character. He tries to discourage us when we face trials in life and tell us lies about who we are in Christ, who God is, and what God wants to do in our lives. But Colossians 2:13-15 also tells us that Jesus overcame the power of the devil and the powers of darkness, putting them to open shame by His victory over them on the cross. And we can stand firm in any spiritual battle through God’s strength.
Here’s something amazing we learn from how Jesus handled the schemes of the Enemy in His life–and it’s something Emerson Day captures so well in “Get Behind Me.” We can resist and overcome the schemes of the Enemy in our lives through the power of Jesus and His Word. Notice how every time Satan tempted Jesus, Jesus spoke the truth of Scripture in response. And as He did, the Enemy fled.
So, what are you battling today? Is it a lie that you are not good enough? Is it a temptation to give into sin? Is it hopelessness and discouragement? Is it a lie that God won’t help you in whatever you’re going through and that He can’t bring any good out of your situation? Ask yourself this question and look up the answers in the Bible: What does the truth of God’s Word say about what I’m dealing with?
Then, use Scripture as a tool to guard your heart and mind with truth, through the power of Jesus, and a spiritual weapon against the tactics of the Enemy in your life. Meditate on God’s Word. Pray God’s Word over your thoughts, emotions, and needs. Sing the truth of God’s Word through songs like “Get Behind Me.” And watch God work in your life and cause the Enemy to flee on your behalf, in the name of Jesus. Hopefully “Get Behind Me” helps put a little faith and fight in you to do just that.
A final word: Be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on all of God’s armor so that you will be able to stand firm against all strategies of the devil. (Ephesians 6:10-11 NLT)
