The latest song from Jon Reddick can now be heard in rotation on 89.5 KTSY!
In “No Fear” Jon Reddick references a verse from the famous Psalm 23. You probably know it as “the Lord is my shepherd” psalm. The verse quoted in the lyric is this: “Even when I walk through the darkest valley, I will not be afraid, for you are close beside me. Your rod and your staff protect and comfort me. (Psalm 23:4 NLT) In this psalm, as David compares God’s care, guidance, and protection in our live to a shepherd leading his sheep, we learn why we don’t need to have fear when God is in our lives.. Even though when we walk through the darkest valleys of life, God is with us, He comforts us, and He protects us.
There’s another thing I appreciate about these lyrics: Jon boldly declares the truth of Scripture concerning fear in our lives. He allows God’s Word to comfort him, but he also uses the truth of God’s Word as a weapon in spiritual battle.
Sometimes we need to get a little feisty in our faith. Sometimes we need to boldly draw near to God, resist the schemes of the devil in our lives, and walk in the victory that is our through Jesus (James 4:7-8). Songs like this help us hear, declare, pray, and sing the truth of Scripture over our situations, and when we do that we’re reminded of God’s love, character, and promises. Our hearts are filled with hope, our minds are renewed, and the devil flees at the proclamation of the Word of God, just as he did when Jesus resisted him using Scripture when he was tempted in the wilderness (Matthew 4:1-11).
Here’s a fun challenge for you: Find verses in the Bible that speak to the issue of fear, or that relate to whatever situation you are going through right now, and pray God’s Word over the emotions and needs in your life. Won’t it be amazing to see how God moves in your heart and your circumstances as you follow the example in this song and pray His Word?!
Fear doesn’t have to get the last word. Fear doesn’t have to control you. When you are afraid, put your trust in God (Psalm 56:3). Let Him calm your fears, fight for you in whatever situation is coming against you, and let Him rescue you from your troubles.
“I prayed to the Lord, and he answered me. He freed me from all my fears. Those who look to him for help will be radiant with joy; no shadow of shame will darken their faces. In my desperation I prayed, and the Lord listened; he saved me from all my troubles.” (Psalm 34:4-5 NLT)
