“Praise the Lord! How good to sing praises to our God! How delightful and how fitting!” – Psalm 147:1
Sound familiar? If you’ve listened to “How Good It Is” by Chris Tomlin, you’ll recognize that lyric and song title are pulled right from Scripture. In fact, all the lyrics of “How Good It Is” come right from God’s Word. Line after line, as you sing along and worship God with this song, you are singing verses from the book of Psalms about how and why we praise God.
Praise is how we celebrate who God is and express our thanksgiving and adoration to Him. We can praise God through our declaration–speaking out praise and thanksgiving to Him, through singing songs to Him, and with our physical posture like kneeling, dancing, or lifting our hands. There are all biblical expressions of praise we find all throughout the book of Psalms. And I love how this song reminds us of these same biblical truths about praise.
It is good to sing praises to God, as we just read in Psalm 147. Yes, even if you don’t consider yourself a singer. “It is good to give thanks to the Lord, to sing praises to the Most High. It is good to proclaim your unfailing love in the morning, your faithfulness in the evening, accompanied by a ten-stringed instrument, a harp, and the melody of a lyre,” Psalm 92:1-2 tells us. It’s good to express our love and praise to God, and it not only brings joy to God’s heart when we do that but our hearts are filled with joy when we celebrate God our Savior.
Praising God is not limited to church services, so here are two questions for you to think about and talk to God about.
What would it look like for you to bring your praise to God in everyday life, not only when you are at church?
What is one step God is leading you to take to participate in worship times and express your praise to Him when you gather to worship God with other believers?
As you respond to God’s leading in answer to these questions and sing “How Good It Is,” keep entering God’s presence with joyful praise!
Enter his gates with thanksgiving; go into his courts with praise. Give thanks to him and praise his name. For the Lord is good. His unfailing love continues forever, and his faithfulness continues to each generation. (Psalm 100:4-5)
Lyrics
How good, how good, how good it is
Oh-oh-oh
How good, how good, how good it is
Oh-oh-oh
How good, how good, how good it is
Enter His gates with thanks
Enter His courts with praise
Bring Him a shout of joy
Sing of His endless faith
For the Lord is good and His love endures
His love endures forever
We remember this
We remember this
Oh, how good that it is to sing praise to the Lord
Oh, how great is the name above all names
From the rising of the morning sun
To the setting of the same
Oh, how good that it is to sing praise
How good it is
Oh-oh-oh
How good, how good, how good it is
Oh-oh-oh
How good, how good, how good it is
Rivers will clap their hands
Mountains will lift their song
Even the rocks cry out
Creation stands in awe
Of the One who was and the One who is
And the One who reigns forever
We remember this
We remember this
Oh, how good that it is to sing praise to the Lord
Oh, how great is the name above all names
From the rising of the morning sun
To the setting of the same
Oh, how good that it is to sing praise
How good it is
Oh-oh-oh
How good, how good, how good it is
Oh, how good that it is to sing praise to the Lord
Oh, how great is the name above all names
From the rising of the morning sun
To the setting of the same
And with every breath inside our lungs
Forever we will sing
Oh, how good that it is to sing praise
Oh, how good that it is to sing praise
How good it is
Oh-oh-oh
How good, how good, how good it is
Oh-oh-oh
How good, how good, how good it is
